Coach Baker begins his 26th year as head cross country coach at HMHS and his team is again coming off a great season. Last year the Bulldogs were the New Jersey Group II State Champions, South Jersey Group II Sectional Champs, Colonial Conference Champs (for the 22nd time) and the South Jersey Open Divisional Champs (12 straight). Last year’s team also won the Courier Post Cup which is awarded to the number one ranked team in all of South Jersey. This year the team is eager to kick off another great season. Coach Baker's Bulldogs have won an impressive 24 South Jersey Sectional and 10 State championships under his leadership. At the end of the 2000 XC season Coach Baker was named New Jersey Cross Country State Coach of the Year and was selected as the Northeast USA Regional Coach of the Year by the National Federation of Coaches Association. He was inducted into the New Jersey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2002. This season is the start of Coach Baker's 97th straight coaching season at HMHS, stretching over 33 years as a teacher and supervisor in the Haddonfield School System. Coach Baker moved to New York from Dublin, Ireland when he was five years old. He graduated from Mt. Vernon HS where his high school won the New York State Cross Country Championship and the Eastern States Track Championship. He graduated from Springfield College where he met his wife Maureen. Mrs. Baker served as Haddonfield's head girls track coach for many years and now coaches the Middle School Track & Cross Country teams. The Bakers reside in Haddonfield with their two children Courtney and Colin. |
